There's a kind of milestone birthday that doesn't suit a party. You don't want a function room and a DJ, and you don't want to spend the evening greeting people at a door. What you want is the fifteen or sixteen people who actually matter, in one place, with good food and nobody watching the clock. A function room gives you three hours and a hard stop. Taking a whole house gives you the weekend: Friday arriving and settling in, Saturday for the day out and the meal and the night, and Sunday morning with everyone in the kitchen together — which is often the bit people remember most fondly. The dining room seats sixteen at one long table, which is a rare thing in adult life and worth a bit of staging. There's a private bar you stock yourself, a lounge with a fireplace, and a library for when the group naturally splits into a loud half and a quiet half, which it always does. The same format works for anniversaries, family reunions with relatives flying in, christenings and communions, and retirement gatherings.

£900 per night at weekends for the whole house, £56 per person at sixteen. £700 midweek, or £44 each. One figure for the property, so you're not chasing sixteen individual payments at sixteen different room rates. Eight bedrooms, all en suite, sleeping sixteen, plus four more on airbeds. Day visitors welcome, so family who live locally can come for the meal without needing a bed — a gathering of twenty-five on the Saturday evening is entirely workable. On food, the advice we'd give is to put the effort into one meal rather than three. Cater Saturday dinner properly through our local catering partner and let the rest be casual in the fully equipped kitchen. Concentrating the spend is what makes the one meal feel like an occasion. You're welcome to decorate, within reason — just ask us about anything involving fixings or open flame. Dog friendly, fully licensed, free parking, two hot tubs and a garden that takes a marquee. All eight bedrooms are on the first floor with stair access only, which is worth checking against your guest list if older relatives are coming. Tell us the date and the numbers and we'll come back with availability and a price.
